Our Take
The GTX70 is Pershing selling deck space instead of top speed, and it is refreshingly open about it. Three Volvo D13 IPS1200 pods, 900 horsepower each for 2,700 in total, give a published 36-knot maximum and a 30-knot cruise, with 300 nautical miles at that cruise from 1,110 gallons. Be careful with the horsepower when you read the spec sheet: Pershing prints the rating per engine, so 900 is one of three. That is the figure people get wrong about this boat more than any other.
What you buy with the pods is the aft end. The machinery sits well aft under the cockpit, the side wings open out to extend the beach area, and a door and recessed window combination lets you run the cockpit and the salon as one room or shut them apart. Three cabins plus a crew cabin sleep the party, and Pershing rates the boat for sixteen aboard. If most of your day happens at anchor rather than underway, that arrangement is worth more to you than the fourteen knots you gave up against the surface-drive boats in the range.
Be honest with yourself about which of those two you are. If pace is the point, the 7X runs surface drives to a published 50 knots and that is the boat to look at. If you want a fourth cabin, more beam and a second crew berth, that is the GTX80. The GTX70 only makes sense if the aft deck is where the day actually happens - and if it is, ask for observed fuel burn at your intended cruise in writing, because triple pods are three service schedules as well as three engines.
