Where to keep a yacht in Bay of Kotor & Tivat
Dockage in the Boka sorts by reach. The entrance belongs to Portonovi's resort basin at Kumbor and Lazure's hotel marina at Meljine, with Lustica Bay's marina village on the open-Adriatic side of the peninsula just seaward. Mid-bay is Tivat and Porto Montenegro — the flagship, with the fuel dock and the yacht club on the same waterfront. The north shore at Bijela is Adriatic 42's refit yard, and through the Verige strait the inner basin ends at Marina Kotor, the only berths directly below the walls. Cruising from Bay of Kotor & Tivat
The entrance. The Boka opens from the Adriatic at Herceg Novi and reaches inland through linked basins. Montenegro's tourism authority puts the bay at 33.7 sq mi (87.3 km²) with a maximum depth of 223 ft (68 m) at the spot it names "Draža's garden" — deep, enclosed water ringed by mountains, which is the whole appeal.
The Verige strait. The DMO names Verige as the strait within the bay, at the Kamenari–Lepetane crossing — the gate between the outer basins and the inner bay. Through it the water opens toward Perast before closing in under Kotor's walls: the signature run of the Boka, flat water under steep rock the whole way.
Kotor's basin. The Port of Kotor operates two cruise berths by the old town and three designated anchorages in the Kotor Bay water area, with pilotage required for yachts over 1000 GRT. Its own figures put the traffic at roughly 500 cruise-ship calls, about half a million passengers and around 1,000 visiting yachts a year — the berthing reward under the walls is real, and so is the company. Time your runs around the ship schedule and the inner bay is yours.
Twelve centuries of seamanship. The DMO records the Boka Navy from 809 C.E. as "the world's oldest continuously operating seafaring organization" — this bay has been worked under sail longer than almost any water you will ever berth in.
The season. The organized calendar runs March through October: Porto Montenegro Yacht Club's 2026 regatta program opens with the Montenegro Spring Cup on 13–15 March and closes with the Charity J70 Regatta on 14 October.
