Where to keep a yacht in Lower Keys
Dockage down here is small, personal and mostly call-ahead. The one published transient offer in the whole stretch is Bahia Honda State Park's 19-slip basin at $2 a foot — everything else, from the Old Wooden Bridge's cottages to Geiger Key's fish camp, runs on a phone call. The glamorous exception sits four miles off Little Torch: Little Palm Island's private lagoon dock for yachts to 120 feet. Cruising from Lower Keys
The reef. Looe Key is the Lower Keys' signature dive — a 374-acre Sanctuary Preservation Area of classic spur-and-groove about 6.3 miles south of Ramrod Key. SPA rules are strict: no fishing or collecting, no touching or standing on coral, no anchoring on coral, and no anchoring at all when a mooring buoy is available — the sanctuary maintains nearly 500 free first-come buoys across its waters, and NOAA has announced that in 2027 anchoring of any kind becomes prohibited inside SPAs, with limited exceptions. Newfound Harbor's inshore patch reef off Little Palm carries the same protections — NOAA notes many of its coral heads were damaged by boaters misjudging the shallow approach from Hawk Channel.
The crossovers. Ocean to Gulf, the Coast Pilot ranks them plainly. Bahia Honda Channel is the deepest passage between the Straits and Florida Bay (8 feet reported, 1983) — but its three fixed spans clear only 20 and 23 feet over the channel, currents average 2 knots or more, and the Coast Pilot warns of falling debris at the old span. Niles Channel is the best route to the Gulf between Bahia Honda and Key West (4 feet reported, 40-foot fixed bridge). Kemp Channel is local-knowledge water, and Bow Channel isn't recommended over 2 feet of draft without a pilot. The gulfside Big Spanish Channel alternate reported just 2 feet in 1983 with submerged pilings — the color of the water is your guide up there. All of these are dated "reported" soundings; run them like it.
The backcountry. The gulfside flats sit inside the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge — open to propeller boats, kayaks and sail, closed to personal watercraft, airboats and hovercraft. Refuge buoys mark no-entry, no-motor and idle-speed zones (they are not mooring buoys — don't tie to them), and the FWS grounding advice is scripture here: never power off a flat; trim up and walk the boat to deeper water, even if that means waiting on the tide.
Weather bolt-holes. The Coast Pilot names Saddlebunch Harbor, 10.5 miles east of Key West, a good hurricane anchorage for small craft (mind the submerged pilings at its northwest end), and Boca Chica's naval basin an emergencies-only refuge — the Naval Air Station's restricted areas are real and charted.
Fuel honesty. Sugarloaf Marina, Geiger Key and Triton Sea Center on Big Pine all publish fuel — none of them publishes diesel. Plan diesel at Marathon or Stock Island and treat the Lower Keys as gas-outboard country, because that's what it is.
