Yachting in Charleston
A Minted Location · Charleston, South Carolina
If you are running the coast, Charleston is the harbour that takes what the Intracoastal cannot. The entrance carries a federal project depth of 54 ft over the bar and 52 ft into the main reaches, the bridges to downtown clear 186 ft, and the city marina publishes slips from 30 ft all the way to 455 ft on an 18.5 ft draft allowance with no height restriction at all.
What that deepwater reputation hides is the boat most people here actually own. Safe Harbor Bristol, the most local of the downtown marinas, caps at 60 ft LOA, 9 ft draft and 14 ft of air draft, and slip inventory across the harbour runs 40–80 ft. The 455 ft berth is real, and it is transient capacity — the operator's own product for it is winter storage.
The one thing to settle before you plan a route: every ICW course out of Charleston is capped at roughly 65 ft of air draft, north and south. Anything taller runs offshore. That decides whether the boat you are looking at can leave town the way you imagined.
Where to keep a yacht in Charleston
Downtown, the Ashley River waterfront carries the market. Safe Harbor Charleston City — the MegaDock — publishes wet and transient slips from 30 ft to 455 ft, max beam 65 ft, max draft 18.5 ft, and height unrestricted; its own page calls it "home to the famed MegaDock which hosts some of the most prestigious yachts in the world." Ashley Marina sits alongside with roughly 230 slips to 120 ft and two high-speed diesel and two non-ethanol gas pumps. Safe Harbor Bristol, a few hundred yards further up, is the counterweight: 35–60 ft, 9 ft draft, 14 ft air draft.
Across the harbour in Mount Pleasant, Charleston Harbor Marina is the largest by count at 459 slips with 17,000 ft of linear dockage, deep-draft slips with no height limitations, 24-hour gas and diesel, power to 100 A three-phase — and a U.S. Customs Port of Entry, which matters if you are arriving from abroad. Settle maximum LOA with the dockmaster when you book.
Up the Wando River, Safe Harbor City Boatyard takes transients to 100 ft and runs an 88-ton Travel Lift with hurricane haul-out to 165,000 lbs, 80 ft LOA and 15 ft draft. That last figure is the market's real ceiling: Charleston can berth a megayacht and cannot refit one. A 130 ft owner needing a haul-out runs to Florida.

Cruising from Charleston
Charleston sits at ICW Mile 469.0, and the mileage does the planning for you: Georgetown is Mile 403.0, sixty-six statute miles north; Beaufort, South Carolina is Mile 536.0, sixty-seven south; the Savannah River and Fields Cut are around Mile 575.6.
Coming in from sea, the entrance runs between converging jetties. The north jetty is largely submerged, so the approach is made seaward of Lighted Buoy 18, and a submerged obstruction with a least depth of 9 ft lies southeast of the south jetty's outer end. Once inside there is no air-draft limit to downtown — the Ravenel bridges clear 186 ft over the Cooper, I-526 clears 155 ft over the Cooper and 138 ft over the Wando.
Leaving by the Intracoastal is the opposite story. Northbound, the Isle of Palms Connector at Mile 458.9 is fixed at 65 ft, then the Ben Sawyer swing bridge at Mile 462.2 shows 31 ft closed. Southbound, the James Island Expressway at Mile 469.9 is fixed at 67 ft, the Wappoo Creek bascule at Mile 470.8 is 33 ft closed — Coast Pilot warns that "extreme caution is advised when running through the bridge with a current" — then Elliott Cut, where strong currents run on both ebb and flood, and the Limehouse bridge at Mile 479.3 at 65 ft.
North of town, the Bulls Bay and Cape Romain inlets are for local knowledge and small boats: Price Creek carries a controlling depth of 5 ft, and Capers Inlet about a foot and a half over the bar with breakers across the whole entrance. Coast Pilot calls Price Creek "the best between Bulls Bay and Charleston," which tells you the standard. Upriver on the Cooper, depths of 20 ft or more are generally available to The Tee, twenty-six miles above the Battery.
- Ashley River Special Anchorage — Ashley River, across from the municipal marina — downtownA federally designated special anchorage area under 33 CFR 110.1 and 110.72d, described in NOAA Coast Pilot 4 as lying across the river from the municipal marina. A slow, no-wake zone is marked just to the south.
- Rebellion Reach / South Channel — Charleston Harbor entranceThe federal deep-draft anchorage under 33 CFR 110.173. Coast Pilot puts the principal deep-draft anchorage in the triangle westward of where Rebellion Reach joins South Channel, and notes that its use is not recommended for deep-draft vessels in some conditions — worth a call to the pilots before you plan on lying there.

On the Charleston calendar
Charleston Race Week runs at Patriots Point in Charleston Harbor, April 16–19, 2026, marking its thirtieth anniversary since 1996.
Tournament and boat-show dates move year to year — confirm them with the organiser before you plan a passage around one. The clearest seasonal signal in the harbour is the winter-storage product Safe Harbor Charleston City sells for vessels from 35 ft to 455 ft: for big boats Charleston is a seasonal layover more than a year-round home port.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size boat do people actually keep in Charleston?
Mostly 40 to 80 ft. The published slip inventory tells the story: Safe Harbor Bristol, the most local of the downtown marinas, caps at 60 ft LOA with 9 ft of draft and 14 ft of air draft, and Ripley Light is a 40 ft drystack. Both ICW routes out of town are capped at 65 ft of air draft, and the dock-and-dine scene on Shem Creek sits under a 12 ft bridge. The 455 ft berth downtown is real, and it is transient capacity.
Can you refit a large yacht in Charleston?
Not above about 80 ft. The purpose-built yacht yard, Safe Harbor City Boatyard, runs an 88-ton Travel Lift with hurricane haul-out limits of 165,000 lbs, 80 ft LOA and 15 ft draft. Ross Marine does refit and repair work and settles lift capacity on the phone. Detyens Shipyards has graving docks to 751 ft, but works as a commercial and government ship repair yard rather than a yacht facility. In practice Charleston berths megayachts and sends them to Florida to be hauled — a useful thing to know before choosing a home port.
How far is Charleston from Georgetown, Beaufort and Savannah by water?
Charleston sits at ICW Mile 469.0. Georgetown, South Carolina is Mile 403.0, sixty-six statute miles north through Winyah Bay. Beaufort, South Carolina is Mile 536.0, sixty-seven statute miles south, with Hilton Head and Port Royal Sound beyond it. The Savannah River at Fields Cut is around Mile 575.6. North of Charleston the Bulls Bay and Cape Romain inlets are local-knowledge water — Coast Pilot calls Price Creek the best of them, and it carries a controlling depth of 5 ft.
What is the largest yacht that can dock in Charleston?
Safe Harbor Charleston City publishes wet and transient slips from 30 ft to 455 ft, with a maximum beam of 65 ft, a maximum draft of 18.5 ft and no height restriction. Getting there is not the constraint either: the federal entrance channel carries 54 ft over the bar and 52 ft into the main reaches, and the bridges to downtown clear 186 ft. Across the harbour, Charleston Harbor Marina states deep-draft slips with no height limitations across 459 slips and 17,000 ft of linear dockage — settle maximum length with the dockmaster when you book.
Can a large yacht leave Charleston on the Intracoastal Waterway?
Only if it clears about 65 ft of air draft. Heading north the Isle of Palms Connector at ICW Mile 458.9 is fixed at 65 ft; heading south the Limehouse bridge at Mile 479.3 is also fixed at 65 ft, with the James Island Expressway at 67 ft before it. Anything taller runs offshore in both directions. Two bascule bridges add timing rather than height — Ben Sawyer at Mile 462.2 shows 31 ft closed and Wappoo Creek at Mile 470.8 shows 33 ft closed, and NOAA Coast Pilot advises extreme caution running Wappoo Creek with a current.
