Horizon is the builder people arrive at second, and usually stay with.
The first time most buyers hear the name they are cross-shopping European yards, and the Taiwanese build address reads as a question mark. It should read as the opposite. This is a yard that has been building since 1987, that infuses its hulls and superstructures using a licensed SCRIMP process rather than hand-laying them, and that will genuinely change a general arrangement for you — semi-custom at Horizon means the layout moves, not just the fabric samples.
What that buys you in practice is volume per foot. The fast-displacement FD hull is the clearest example: an FD80 gives you a full-beam owner's suite on the main deck at a length you can still run without permanent crew, which is a combination the planing-hull yards in that size simply cannot offer. Move up to the raised-pilothouse RP110 and you get superyacht deck space without the visual bulk and the crew overhead of a tri-deck.
My one real criticism is documentation. On both the FD80 and the RP110, Horizon's own specification table disagrees with its own prose about how many cabins the boat has. For a yard that builds this well, that is an unforced error — and for a buyer it means the general arrangement and the sea trial matter more than usual.

Who builds Horizon Yachts, and where?
Horizon Yacht was co-founded in 1987 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan by chief executive John Lu with Gong Shan Chiai and Cheng Shun Hui, and builds every hull at that yard. It is now one of the largest semi-custom yacht builders outside Europe.
Hulls and superstructures are laid up using the licensed SCRIMP resin-infusion process rather than hand lay-up, which is what lets the yard keep weight down while holding the structural margins a semi-custom brief demands.
What is a fast-displacement hull, and why does Horizon build them?
A fast-displacement hull has a long waterline and a fine entry, so it moves efficiently without trying to climb onto a plane. The practical payoff is interior volume: the hull carries its beam much further forward and aft than a planing hull, which is why an FD80 has the volume of a considerably longer planing boat.
It also makes fuel consumption predictable, because you are not spending power simply to hold the boat on step. The FD series is now the largest part of Horizon's range.
How customisable is a Horizon yacht?
Genuinely semi-custom: at Horizon the general arrangement moves, not just the fabric samples. The yard organises its range into eight series — FD, E, RP, V, PC, EP, P and CC — with the CC line built fully to order.
That flexibility comes with one practical consequence. Because layouts vary hull to hull, the model brochure is a starting point rather than a description of the boat you are being offered. Always read the general arrangement for the specific hull.
Where do the speed and range figures quoted for Horizon yachts come from?
From magazine sea trials and brokers' listings. For the FD80 and the RP110, every knots-and-miles figure in circulation traces back to a trial of one specific hull at one specific load.
Those figures may well be representative of the boat that was tested, but they are not factory specifications and should not be the basis of a purchase decision. Ask for measured figures — observed burn and speed at your intended cruise — on the specific boat you are buying.
