Fast Displacement — the hull form that gives an 80-footer the volume of a 90 and the fuel bill of neither
Most yachts in this size range make you choose: plane and pay for it, or displace and accept 10 knots.
The FD Series is Horizon's answer to that, and it is a hull-form answer rather than a styling one. Fast displacement means a long waterline, a fine entry and a hull that carries far more interior volume for its length than a planing boat can — which is why an FD80 feels like a 90-footer inside, and why the series has become the largest part of Horizon's range.
Seven models run from the FD75 to the FD130. We review two of them: the FD80, which put the full-beam owner's suite on the main deck at a length an owner can still operate, and the FD100, where that main-deck owner's suite comes with quarters for four crew behind it. Horizon's own summary of the line is "Innovation, Efficiency, Style and Space," and for once the order is about right.

Moving Up the FD Series
The FD range runs FD75, FD80, FD90, FD97, FD100, FD110 and FD130, and the decision most buyers actually face is where the crew line falls.
FD80. 80'7" on a 22'6" beam, twin MTU 10V2000 M96Ls, 2,700 gallons. Horizon's specification lists three guest cabins plus crew, and the boat is set up so a couple can run it with day help rather than a permanent crew list.
FD100. 101'7" on a 23'9" beam, 6'2" of draft and 128 tonnes, twin CAT C32As at 1,600 hp, 4,000 gallons of fuel and 400 of water. Horizon publishes it in two configurations — a Tri-Deck with a lightweight open flybridge above the bridge deck, or a Skyline with a large wheelhouse and an enclosed skylounge aft — in a single specification table whose mechanical rows are identical for both. Only the superstructure and the layout change. A full-beam master suite on the main deck, crew quarters for four aft, and a beach club on either version.
The step between the two is not really the twenty-one feet. The FD80 is set up for a couple with day help; the FD100 carries a crew of four and half again the fuel. That is the crew line, and once you cross it the boat becomes a different commitment to run rather than a longer version of the same one.
Above them, the FD110 and FD130 assume full-time crew as a matter of course, and the FD90 and FD97 sit in the gap between the two boats reviewed here. Below, the FD75 is the entry point to the hull form.
Most FD models are offered in more than one superstructure and Horizon publishes identical specification figures across the variants — the FD80 as a Skyline enclosed bridge or a split-use skylounge, the FD100 as a Tri-Deck or a Skyline.
Our Take
The FD hull is the reason to look at Horizon at all, and the FD80 is where it makes the most sense.
What you are actually buying is volume per foot. A 22'6" beam on an 80-foot boat is not wide, but the fast-displacement hull carries that beam much further forward and aft than a planing hull does, and the payoff shows up as a full-beam owner's suite on the main deck — on a boat you can still berth without a professional crew. That is a genuinely unusual combination in the high seventies and low eighties, and it is worth more day to day than another two knots.
Two things to go in with your eyes open about. The widely repeated "1,600-mile range" is not a Horizon figure — I suspect it started life as the 1,600 horsepower on the engine plate — so treat range as something the sea trial establishes rather than the brochure. And Horizon's own page contradicts itself on cabins, with a specification table reading three guest cabins plus crew while the prose beside it describes an on-deck master and three staterooms below. Ask for the general arrangement of the specific hull.
None of that is a reason not to buy the boat. It is a reason to buy it on a sea trial and a GA rather than on a brochure.

Where does the crew line fall in the Horizon FD range?
Around the FD90. Below it, the FD80 is set up so a couple can run the boat with day help rather than a permanent crew list. The FD90 and FD100 add a genuine second interior deck and the crew accommodation that goes with it, and from the FD110 up you are buying a boat that assumes full-time crew.
That is the real decision in this range, and it matters more to your running costs than the ten feet of length that triggers it.
