Our Take
Buy a 95-footer and you are either buying a main-deck master or you are not — most of the rest is variation. The 940 puts the owner's suite forward on the main deck at the full 22'2" beam, and that is the reason to look at this boat. You are not going down a companionway to bed, the suite gets its own windows at eye level with the water, and the four guest cabins below stop competing with you for the good real estate. It reads like a small thing on a spec sheet. Live aboard for ten days and it is the only thing.
The engine choice is the other decision worth slowing down for. Ferretti publishes the 940 with twin MAN V12 2000s as standard, good for 25 knots flat out and 21 at cruise, and offers the V12X 2200 that takes those to 27 and 23. Two knots of cruise does not sound like much. Across a long day it is most of an hour, and on a boat this size an hour is the difference between arriving for dinner and arriving in the dark. Whether that is worth the option price comes down to how you plan to use her — if she is going to sit in Fort Lauderdale and do the Bahamas four times a year, the standard package is plenty of boat.
Be wary of anyone who hands you a range, a burn rate and a horsepower figure without a test sheet behind them. There are 2,378 gallons in the tanks and 85,000 kilos to push; what that comes to in range is a question for a sea trial, not a brochure. Get it answered in writing before you sign.
