It is Friday evening, the bags are aboard, and the person driving is you. That is the whole brief for the Absolute 47 FLY. At 48' 0" overall on a 14' 10" beam it is the smallest boat in Absolute's Flybridge line, and it is the one built so that a flybridge, three cabins and a full weekend do not add up to a captain on the payroll.
Most 48-footers ask you to choose between the third cabin and the top deck. This one does neither.
Three cabins, and the third one is real
Below deck there are two doubles and a twin, with two heads. The twin matters more than the count suggests: it takes single berths rather than bunks, which is the difference between a cabin your teenagers will use and one they will complain about.
The master is forward and raised to the floor level without a step, so you walk in rather than climb down. It carries a spacious closet, a vanity desk and an en-suite head with a porthole in the shower. The VIP takes a double berth you can reach from three sides and a walk-in closet of its own. Two of the cabins have panoramic windows, and Absolute holds the ceiling height across all three — which is what stops the lower deck of a 48-footer reading as a corridor with doors off it.
The main deck is one room
The galley is aft and opens straight into the cockpit, so the two work as a single space rather than as a kitchen and a patio. The glazing runs pillar-free the length of the saloon, which means the person making lunch is still part of the afternoon. Air conditioning is fitted throughout, and the saloon carries a double sofa, a table and a multimedia area.
The flybridge is a deck rather than an overflow: a barbecue station, a generous relaxation area and a large sunpad alongside the helm, so whoever is driving stays in the conversation. Forward, the bow opens into a sundeck reached along protected side walkways with high, ergonomic handrails — the detail that decides whether anyone goes forward at anchor or only in a photograph.
What the pods are actually for
Absolute specifies twin Volvo Penta D6-IPS650 pod drives, and it is the only package on the boat. Pods put a joystick at the helm and turn a windy slip from a two-person job into a one-person job, which is the reason the side door beside the main helm exists: you can step out mid-manoeuvre and take your own line.
Fuel is 423 gallons and fresh water 140. Those two numbers shape a weekend more than anything else on the sheet, and with three cabins occupied it is usually the water that runs out first. The boat is certified CE Category B for 14 people aboard.
At sea trial, ask for observed speed and fuel burn at the rpm you actually intend to sit at, in writing, on the exact hull and engine package you are ordering — then work your own weekend range off the 423 gallons. Ask the yard to confirm the draft and rigged weight of your build in writing too, before you book a lift, a berth or a transport quote.
Where it sits in the range
The 47 opens the Flybridge line, which then runs 52, 56, 60 and 70. Stepping up to the 52 FLY buys seven feet of length, a galley and bar on the flybridge instead of a barbecue station, and a crew cabin — which is why the 52 keeps all three of its cabins in the guest count too. Stay at the 47 and you keep the family resemblance: pods, an aft galley serving the cockpit, a helm with its own door, a flybridge laid out to be lived on, and a bow sundeck along protected walkways.
The more interesting comparison is sideways. The 48 Coupé shares this boat's 14' 10" beam, its 423-gallon fuel and 140-gallon water capacities and the same D6-IPS650 package, and spends the difference on a lower profile, a solar roof and opening side gunwales.
