The Sundancer is the boat that made Sea Ray's name. Sea Ray's own history page puts its release in the era when the company opened its Merritt Island plant, and credits it with defining the cabin cruiser for the industry — a claim that is hard to argue with given how many builders have since copied the format.
What a Sundancer is, in current form, is a sport cruiser that refuses to choose. Bowrider seating forward, a cabin below rated to sleep four, an enclosed head, and a cockpit built for hosting. Both boats reviewed here run twin Mercury MerCruiser sterndrives on Bravo Three X drives with Joystick Piloting as standard equipment rather than an upgrade.

Moving Up the Sundancer Series
The Sundancer 320 at 32'10" is the entry point, and the more surprising of the two. It carries actuated headrests and armrests in the bow — genuine bowrider seating on a boat with a full cabin below, which is uncommon at this size. Twin MerCruiser 6.2L engines at 300 hp a side standard, 350 hp optional, 158 gallons of fuel, 21 degrees of deadrise and a 14,000-pound dry weight. Below there is a convertible V-berth and mid-berth bunks, an enclosed head and a galley. The coupe option adds a fiberglass hardtop with a full windshield, opening side vents and a retracting canvas sunroof.
The Sundancer 370 at 37'8" is the boat Sea Ray credits with establishing its current design language, and you can trace everything since back to it: the two hull windows, the sharper sheer, the coupe hardtop with a panoramic skylight. Twin 8.2L MAG HO engines at 430 hp each on SeaCore drives — 860 horsepower, and the only package offered. It is also the more capable boat in every practical sense: a bow cockpit reached through a folding glass door, a head with a separate shower stall rather than a wet bath, CZone digital switching at the helm, and dual 16-inch Simrad displays.
The performance gap between them is not what you would expect, because Sea Ray publishes figures for one and not the other. The 370 is rated at 36 to 38 mph cruise, 42 to 44 mph wide open, and 135 miles of range at cruise. For the 320, Sea Ray publishes no speed and no range at all.

Our Take
A Sundancer is a specific proposition and it has not really changed in forty years: one boat that hosts a crowd in daylight and sleeps a family after dark, run by the person who owns it. What has changed is how well it does the second half. The 370's separate shower stall is the detail I would point at — most builders at this length still give you a wet head with a curtain, and that single decision is the difference between a boat you will spend a weekend on and one you will not.
The 320 is the more interesting engineering answer, though. Putting actuated bow seating on a boat with a real cabin below is not the obvious move, and it resolves the argument that stops a lot of couples buying anything at all.
My one complaint is the same one I have with the SLX line: the 370 publishes a cruise speed, a top speed and two range figures, and the 320 publishes nothing. Sea Ray clearly has the data. Buyers of the smaller boat deserve it too.

Do both Sea Ray Sundancers sleep four?
Yes. Sea Ray publishes a Sleeps row for both boats and both are rated at four. On the Sundancer 320 that is a V-berth with seating around a solid wood table that converts to a berth, plus mid-berth bunks aft, with an enclosed head and a 27-gallon holding tank. On the Sundancer 370 it is a forward V-berth lounge with an L-shaped couch and a mid-cabin, with a 30-gallon holding tank. The meaningful difference is the head: the 370 has a separate shower stall with its own finishes, where the 320 has an enclosed head with a shower in the same compartment.
How much faster is the Sundancer 370 than the 320?
Nobody can answer that honestly, because Sea Ray publishes speed figures for the 370 and none for the 320. The 370 is rated at 36 to 38 mph cruising and 42 to 44 mph wide open, with 135 statute miles of range at cruise from 250 gallons. For the 320, Sea Ray's specification block stops after the holding tank and the Sleeps row — no cruise speed, no top speed, no range. What you can compare is the power: 860 horsepower from twin 8.2L MAG HO engines on the 370 against 600 horsepower standard from twin 6.2L engines on the 320, moving 20,800 pounds and 14,000 pounds respectively. Anything more precise about the 320 needs a sea trial.
Is the Sundancer coupe hardtop worth the money?
It depends almost entirely on where you boat. The coupe option adds a fiberglass hardtop with a full windshield and opening side vent windows, and on the 320 it is available with a retracting canvas sunroof so the boat does not feel closed in. In Florida sun, on the Gulf Coast or crossing to the Bahamas, weather protection at the helm changes how many days a year the boat gets used. On a northern lake where the season is short and the good days are the reason you go out, the money may be better spent elsewhere. Look at an open boat and a coupe on the same dock before deciding.
