Quick Verdict

  • Four Volvo Penta IPS3 1050 pods, 800 HP each — pod propulsion on a 100-footer, which is what frees the aft end for terraced decks and opening side platforms
  • Sanlorenzo's own brief calls the layout a blank canvas: the yard expects owners to interpret the volume rather than accept a fixed plan
  • Published at 23 knots with 15,800 litres of fuel, 8 guests and 5 crew

Our Take

The SX100 answers a question nobody was asking a decade ago: what if a 100-footer did not have to behave like a small superyacht. Sanlorenzo committed to the crossover idea rather than hedging it, and the result is a boat where the best space is at the waterline instead of three decks up. Terraced decks, opening side platforms, a sculpted stern — the yard's own description is a seamless dialogue between yacht and water, and for once the marketing line is accurate.

Bernardo Zuccon describes the platform as a blank canvas that owners interpret according to their own habits. That is a genuine feature and it is also a warning: two SX100s can be very different boats inside. When you compare hulls, compare the actual general arrangement drawings, not the range brochure.

Be careful with secondhand specifications on this model in particular. The figures circulating for the SX100 are frequently wrong — I have seen it described with twin MAN V12s on conventional shafts, which is not this boat. Sanlorenzo's own page gives four Volvo Penta IPS3 1050 pod drives at 800 horsepower each, 15,800 litres of fuel and eight guests. Quad pods and twin shafts are not a detail; they are different boats to run, dock, insure and service. Get the yard's specification, get the sea trial sheet, and ask what the last service on all four drives cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engines does the Sanlorenzo SX100 have?

Four Volvo Penta IPS3 1050 pod drives, based on the D13B block and rated at 800 horsepower each. This is worth stating clearly because the SX100 is frequently and incorrectly described with twin MAN V12 diesels on conventional shafts. Quad pods and twin shafts are entirely different propulsion arrangements to dock, insure and maintain. Sanlorenzo's own specification block gives the pods, along with 15,800 litres of fuel and a maximum speed of 23 knots.

How much fuel does the Sanlorenzo SX100 carry?

Sanlorenzo publishes a fuel capacity of 15,800 litres, which is 4,174 US gallons, plus 2,050 litres of fresh water. Both figures are from the yard's own specification block. Sanlorenzo publishes no range figure, so converting that capacity into distance requires observed fuel consumption from a sea trial at the speed you intend to run, with a sensible reserve deducted.

Is the Sanlorenzo SX100 layout fixed?

No. Bernardo Zuccon, who designed it, describes the SX100 as a versatile design platform where the large spaces are effectively a blank canvas — an opportunity for owners to interpret the boat around their own needs and habits. That flexibility is one of the reasons to buy a Sanlorenzo, and it means two SX100s can differ considerably below deck. Always read the general arrangement drawing for the specific hull rather than assuming a standard arrangement.
