Cruising from Palm Beach
The inlet. The Lake Worth Inlet is a working deep-water entrance: the Port of Palm Beach publishes a 300-foot-wide channel with no aerial obstructions, operating drafts of minus 33 feet, and about twenty minutes from the sea buoy to the docks.
The lagoon. Lake Worth Lagoon is Palm Beach County's largest estuary — 20 miles from North Palm Beach to Ocean Ridge — and the county has spent two decades rebuilding its islands and seagrass. Day one on any new boat here usually ends at Peanut Island, the 37-acre boat-access-only county park sitting right in the inlet: two boat docks, fourteen day-use slips, a guarded swim beach and a snorkeling lagoon. There's no food concession on the island — provision before you go.
North to Jupiter. The ICW runs protected all the way up through Palm Beach Gardens to the Jupiter Inlet, which has its own dedicated government: the Jupiter Inlet District, established 1921, maintains the inlet and the navigable channel from the Loxahatchee River to the sea. Take the District at its word on conditions — it has posted temporary buoys where the inlet throat shoals and tells mariners plainly that conditions change. Check its notices before you shoot the inlet; locals do.
The Bahamas. This is the shortest serious staging point on the coast — Sailfish Marina calls itself the closest marina to the inlet and "only 45 miles from the Bahamas," and Safe Harbor Old Port Cove puts itself 61 nautical miles out. Fuel at the inlet, watch the Stream, and you're in West End for lunch.
The fish. The tourism authority's phrase is the honest one: a short cruise to the Gulf Stream and legendary Sailfish Alley. Winter sailfishing off these inlets is the reason half the boats on this page exist.
