The Lagoon 46 Iconic measures 47'7" (14.50 m) overall on a 26'1" (7.96 m) beam and draws only 4'6" (1.37 m) — shallow enough for the thin water of the Bahamas, wide enough that the saloon and the two hulls read as one continuous floor rather than three separate rooms. Light displacement is 35,942 lbs (16,300 kg). Lagoon builds her in 3-4 Cabins / 3-4 Heads configurations with six to twelve berths depending on the layout you choose, and rates her CE approval A: 12 / B: 14 / C: 20 / D: 30.

She is built around staying out rather than going out for the day. Tankage runs to 275 gal (1,040 L) of fuel and 159 gal (600 L) of water, the aft cockpit is arranged around a table the whole crew can sit at every evening, and the Iconic update turned the foredeck from a place you walk across into a place you stay: added sun pads and a new, safer access to the sea with a swim ladder on the bow. Take three cabins if the boat is yours alone; four if you want the extra guest door or plan to put her into a charter fleet.

Twin Yanmar (2 x 57 HP) diesels give her 9 knots (under power) at the top end and 7-8 knots (under sail/power) at the pace you will actually hold on passage. That is honest cruising-catamaran performance, and the 4'6" (1.37 m) draft and 35,942 lbs (16,300 kg) light displacement are part of the same trade — volume and easy motion ahead of outright pace.

The rig is the part designed for a couple. An 823 sq ft high-roach mainsail works with the 500 sq ft self-tacking jib for 1,367 sq ft of upwind sail area, and the self-tacker means a tack asks you for the helm and nothing else — no grinding, no crossing the cockpit in the dark. Lagoon's furling boom, developed for the 46 and the Lagoon 51, leaves its mechanism visible instead of burying it under a cover, so you can watch a reef roll in and catch it if it goes in badly. If you sail in light air, the optional 1,130 sq ft Code 0 and the 866 sq ft square-top mainsail are the two choices that change how the boat feels most.

Nauta Design draws the interior, and the decision that shapes your years aboard is three cabins or four. The three-cabin version hands a full hull to the owner; the four-cabin version splits both hulls evenly and is what most charter fleets order. Either way the specification runs to 3-4 Heads and six to twelve berths, and the saloon sits up on the bridgedeck at eye level with the water, so the person at the table and the person at the helm stay in the same conversation.

Outside, you get two distinct places to be. The aft cockpit is the dining room — its table is the social center of the boat, sheltered and on the same level as the saloon. Forward, the Iconic makeover added sun pads and that redesigned access to the sea with a bow swim ladder, which turns the foredeck into the quiet end of the boat: coffee in the morning, a book in the afternoon, well away from whatever is happening aft. Lagoon backs the structure for seven years and the Yanmar engines for five.

Within the Lagoon range the 46 Iconic is the doorway into serious liveaboard territory — a clear step up in volume and cabin count from the 45'5" Lagoon 43, and a step below the new 49'1" Lagoon 47 and the 51'2" Lagoon 51 Iconic, both of which ask for more marina and more boat-handling than a first-time catamaran owner may want. It is the largest Lagoon that still behaves like a two-person boat with nobody else aboard. Cross-brand, buyers put it beside the Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47, the Bali 4.6 and the Leopard 45: mid-forties cruising cats, three and four cabins, no crew required. What separates the Lagoon is the reimagined forward lounge and a rig specified on the assumption that the owner is the one doing the sailing.

Buy the 46 Iconic if you and your partner plan to run the boat yourselves for months at a time, want a 47-footer you can dock and reef without extra hands, and would rather have a forward lounge and a bow swim ladder than another half a knot. It suits shallow cruising grounds especially well — 4'6" (1.37 m) gets you into anchorages that keep deeper boats outside. Be honest about two things first. If you regularly carry more than six people, or you want a genoa and a rig with more to trim, the 51'2" Lagoon 51 Iconic is the better boat and its twin 80 HP Yanmars carry the extra weight properly. And if your home berth is tight, measure before you commit: 26'1" (7.96 m) of beam is a real constraint on where this boat can live.
