You want the boat that finally makes the long trip possible. The one where your kids get their own end of the hull, where you and your partner can tuck in a reef without waking the guests, and where the swim off the bow is two steps instead of a production. That is the brief the Lagoon 46 Iconic was drawn to answer.
Lagoon's own framing for the boat is "an invitation to relax." The Iconic treatment gives the 46 a new visual signature developed with Garage Yacht Design, plus a reworked forward living area. Underneath, this remains a 47'7" sailing catamaran built for people who measure a season in weeks aboard, not weekends.
Who the Lagoon 46 Iconic Is For
This is a family and cruising-couple boat. Lagoon offers it in three-cabin and four-cabin versions, with berths for six to twelve people and CE approval of A: 12 / B: 14 / C: 20 / D: 30 — offshore category for a dozen aboard. The three-cabin layout is the owner's configuration: one hull yours, the other for guests. The four-cabin version suits larger families and charter programs.
What it is not is a performance multihull. At 35,942 lbs light and 9 knots flat out under power, the 46 Iconic is a platform that rewards patience and planning. If your ideal day ends with everyone spread across three different parts of the boat and nobody in anybody's way, this is the right shape of yacht.
Layout and Accommodation
The hull measures 45'11" (13.99 m), with 47'7" (14.50 m) overall once options are fitted. Inside, Nauta Design handles the interior, and the saloon opens directly onto the aft cockpit so the main social space runs across the full 26'1" beam without a step change in level. The aft cockpit table is the heart of it — Lagoon builds the boat's marketing around gathering there, and it is where the boat spends most of its life at anchor.
Depending on the version you choose, you get three or four cabins and three or four heads. The three-cabin arrangement buys back stowage; the four-cabin arrangement maximizes sleeping capacity at the expense of lockers.
Deck and Living Spaces
The Iconic update's substantive change is forward. Lagoon rebuilt the forward living area with additional sun pads and, more importantly, a new and secure route to the water via a forward swim ladder. On a lot of cruising catamarans the foredeck is a place you walk across to reach the anchor. Here it is a second cockpit with its own reason to exist, and the swim ladder means you can get in and out of the water from the bow without wandering aft past the dinghy.
The styling changes that carry the Iconic name — contemporary lines, stronger contrasts, and careful graphic detailing — were developed with Garage Yacht Design and are shared with the Lagoon 51 Iconic. The platform underneath was named best multihull sailing yacht in a major regional award in 2019.
Under Sail
The standard sail plan totals 127 m² (1,367 sq ft) upwind: a 76.5 m² / 823 sq ft high-roach mainsail and a 46.5 m² / 500 sq ft self-tacking jib. Lagoon offers a square-top mainsail at 80.5 m² / 866 sq ft and a 105 m² / 1,130 sq ft Code 0 as options, and the Code 0 is the one to think hard about — it is what turns a light-air reach from a motoring day into a sailing day.
The headline piece of hardware is the furling boom Lagoon developed for the 46 and 51. Its mechanism is deliberately not hidden by a cover. You can see reefing and furling happening and correct them as they go, which is exactly what you want the first time you shorten sail shorthanded in a rising breeze.
Under power, twin 57 HP Yanmars give a 9-knot maximum; cruising sits at 7-8 knots under sail or power. Lagoon does not publish a range figure for this boat, so plan passages from your own measured burn against the 275-gallon tankage rather than from any number you read online.
Systems and Build
Tankage is 275 gal (1,040 L) of fuel and 159 gal (600 L) of water — generous fuel, modest water, which is why a watermaker belongs high on the option list for anyone cruising beyond easy dock access. Air draft is 76'2", and draft is a shoal-friendly 4'6".
Lagoon backs the boat with a seven-year structural warranty, a five-year warranty on the Yanmar engines, and three years general cover, all with exclusions. That is a production-boat structure, and it is a fair one for this class.
Living With It
The handling story is the reason to choose this boat. The self-tacking jib reduces a tack to a turn of the wheel and nothing else, and the furling boom means reefing happens from a place you can see. Two competent people can run this catamaran, and a couple can run it tired.
The practical constraints are dimensional. The 26'1" beam means a catamaran berth, a T-head or an end tie in a lot of marinas, and it is worth calling ahead rather than arriving hopeful. The 76'2" air draft rules out fixed-bridge routes, so the Intracoastal is not a shortcut you get to take. Maintenance access is good by production-catamaran standards, but a four-cabin, four-head boat is simply more plumbing to service than a three-cabin one.
Honest Trade-Offs
- It is not quick. Nine knots under power and 7-8 knots cruising means you plan around weather windows rather than outrunning them.
- The self-tacking jib trades power for ease. It is wonderful in a busy anchorage and less impressive hard on the wind. The optional Code 0 is the corrective.
- Beam and air draft narrow your options. Marina choice and bridge routes both need checking in advance.
- Weight discipline matters. The stowage volume is inviting; every pound you put in it is a pound the rig has to move.
- This is a production build. The engineering is sound and the warranty is real, but it rewards owners who stay ahead of maintenance rather than catching up on it.
