Sunseeker Predator 65 vs 65 Sport Yacht: One Hull, Two Arguments

Two Sunseekers at 67 feet. Same hull. Same numbers. Different names.

The Predator 65 and the 65 Sport Yacht are 67' 2" overall, 16' 8" in the beam, drawing 5' 3" at full load, displacing 83,357 lbs at half load, powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS 1200 at 2 x 900 HP on pods, carrying 924 gallons of fuel and 211 of fresh water, sleeping six across three cabins with a fourth optional and four en-suites plus crew, and published at up to 35 knots.

Not similar. The same, digit for digit. Every published figure matches.

So the useful article is not a specification comparison. It is a question: what is Sunseeker actually asking you to choose between?

First, a warning about cruise figures

Before anything else, because this is where the pair gets misreported.

Out in the wider internet you will find one cruise figure quoted for the Predator 65 and a different cruise figure quoted for the 65 Sport Yacht - two boats with identical specifications. Both trace back to the same third-party database, and neither is Sunseeker's.

Ignore them. On sea trial, run the boat at the rpm you actually intend to cruise at, ask the dealer for observed burn at that rpm in writing, and do the arithmetic against the 924 gallons under the floor. Fifteen minutes of work, and you own a number instead of borrowing one.

What the Predator's page sells: the back of the boat

Sunseeker's Predator 65 copy spends its energy aft, and it is specific enough to be useful.

The tender garage is extra wide, sized to carry and launch a Williams 345 jet tender over a new diagonal sliding hydraulic bathing platform. The volume left over takes SeaBobs, inflatable paddleboards, diving equipment or racking. If your cruising involves gear rather than just people, that is a genuine advantage over boats where the garage swallows the tender and nothing else.

Alternatively, specify it as a Beach Club. Then the space has a fully flush floor for free-standing furniture, with a rain shower, lighting and speakers built into the opened door - a room at the waterline rather than a locker.

That is one decision, made at order, and it points the boat in two different directions.

The cockpit ahead of it comes four documented ways: seating backed onto the large sunpad over the garage; a social bar unit with matching stools on the port side; a fully integrated wet bar; or an extended J-shaped lounge running aft from the galley across the full width of the cockpit. Forward, the bow is a separate entertaining area with a large sunpad of its own, so the boat has two social zones rather than one.

What the Sport Yacht's page sells: the helm

The 65 Sport Yacht uses its page differently. Its headline feature is the SkyHelm, a helm station with an IPS docking joystick that stands upright for low-speed manoeuvring and lowers to fall into your arms when you are sat low in bespoke seats with carbon fibre backrests and an integrated centre console. Its Beach Club works by carrying the tender on the bathing platform instead of in the garage, freeing that volume for a bar, fridge, BBQ and free-standing seating with direct sea access. And its page tells you where the crew cabin is: forward of the garage.

Same hull, same engines, same everything measurable. One page is written about where your toys live. The other is written about where you sit.

The lower deck, and the option worth studying

Three cabins accommodate six guests. The full-beam master has a generous en-suite; the forward VIP is described as an equal rather than a lesser space. Every guest cabin has its own en-suite and there is a separate day head below, which is more bathroom than a lot of 67-footers manage.

The option list is where the Predator 65 gets genuinely interesting. In place of the standard lower-deck arrangement you can specify an open-plan Owner's Office linked directly to the master stateroom, or a single-berth cabin, or a lower-deck galley, or a lower saloon. A fourth cabin is also available.

Those are order-time decisions. Think about them harder than you think about upholstery, because they change what the boat is.

Engines, and one thing to check on a demonstrator

The standard fit is twin Volvo Penta IPS 1200 at 2 x 900 HP. Sunseeker lists a second, higher-output IPS package alongside it.

If you drive a demonstrator, find out which package is underneath before you form a view about the top end. It is a straightforward question and it saves a misunderstanding later.

The propulsion itself is the part of the trial that matters most for an owner-driver. Pods, joystick, a 67-foot boat with no second helm and no flybridge. Take it into a berth the width of the one you keep, with wind on the beam, and see how you feel.

Where else to look at this size

The Italians are the direct cross-shop. The Pershing 6X at 62' 2" is the sharper, harder performance interpretation. The Riva 66' Ribelle at 67' 10" is within inches on length and sells on finish and on the name.

Both are worth an afternoon. But the decision that will actually be made is the one between two boats at the same dealership, on one hull, with one specification sheet between them - and it comes down to whether you would rather buy the garage or the helm.
