If you want the boat before the season rather than during it, the Gulf Coast hands you a run of fixed dates to work backward from. Stone crab claws come out of the traps on October 15. Four boat shows land between mid-November and the end of February. A lit-up parade and a pirate ship own two more Saturdays in between. Here is the winter, in the order it arrives.
Four shows, November through February
The run opens in Fort Myers, November 12-15, 2026, spread across the city yacht basin, Centennial Park and the Caloosa Sound Convention Center on the downtown Caloosahatchee waterfront. Charlotte County follows January 7-10, 2027 at the Charlotte County Fairgrounds. Bonita Springs closes it out February 25-28, 2027 on Bonita Beach Road. All three are run by the same regional marine industries association, and its show calendar is the page to check before you book anything.
Naples sits in the middle of that run and is the one built around water. January 21-24, 2027, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with the land show at Sugden Regional Park, the in-water display at Naples City Dock, and a shuttle running between the two. It is owned and managed by the Marine Industries Association of Collier County, which also owns the December date below.
December 12, and Naples Bay lights up
The Christmas Boat Parade runs Naples Bay on Saturday, December 12, 2026, from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. The route works past Tin City, Naples City Dock, Naples Landing and Bayview Park, and the City Dock is the reserved-seat vantage point if you would rather watch than drive. If you would rather drive, owners enter their own boats through the association — the entry form and the viewing details sit on the same page, and the evening raises money for the association's foundation.
This is the night that sells a cockpit. A boat you can host a dozen people on for two hours in December is a different boat from the one you fish on Tuesday, and Naples Bay after dark is where the difference shows. Our Naples guide covers the rest of that water.
January 30, and Hillsborough Bay fills up
Gasparilla is the one date on this list where your own boat can be part of the event rather than parked near it. The Jose Gasparilla II sets sail from the south end of Hillsborough Bay at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2027, works north through Seddon Channel between Davis Island and Harbour Island, and ties up at the Tampa Convention Center at 1 p.m. Hundreds of vessels run with her.
Two things follow from that. The flotilla forms at the south end of the bay, not downtown, so plan the approach from the Tampa Bay side and be in position well before 11:30. And read the invasion schedule the week before you go — the krewe sets those timings and nobody else does.
The fishing calendar is the other half of the winter
Stone crab opens October 15 and stays open through May 1, closing May 2. Claws only, minimum 2 7/8 inches, one gallon of claws per person or two per vessel, whichever is less, and up to five traps per person. Anyone 16 or older files an online trap registration with the state first, including people otherwise exempt from a license.
Snook is the one that catches visiting owners out. In the Charlotte Harbor and Southwest management regions, harvest is open September 1 through November 30, closed December 1 through the end of February, then open again March 1 to April 30. One fish per person per day, 28 to 33 inches, hook and line only, and a snook permit on top of the saltwater license. Which means the show months and the snook months barely overlap: if your December guests are planning to keep one, tell them in November.
The boat that fits a winter like this
The calendar asks three different questions. Can it host on a December evening without anyone sitting on a cooler? Can it get you to a show dock and let you sleep aboard when you get there? Can it fish two open seasons and still look right on Naples Bay at night?
Three boats answer it three ways. The Sea Ray Sundancer 370 leans into the evening aboard. The Grady-White Freedom 345 runs a day that starts on the flats and ends with guests in the cockpit. The Pursuit S358 is for the owner who came for the fishing and will admit it. Their spec tables make the argument better than we can. And once the shows are done, the water between them is the reason to stay — we broke that stretch into day-hops.
Tony's Take
If you only do one date on this list, do January 30. You will learn more about what a boat is actually for by watching a few hundred of them try to hold station in Hillsborough Bay than you will in a week of walking show docks — who has the freeboard, who has the visibility, who is comfortable at idle in a crowd. Second choice is December 12 in Naples. The parade is the one night a year when everybody's boat is lit up, and you can see in about ten minutes who thought hard about the cockpit and who thought hard about the brochure. — Tony Smith, Founder, Minted Yachts
