Dock & Dine in Homer & Kachemak Bay
Homer's most famous boat-in restaurant does not take private boats.
The Saltry at Halibut Cove is reached on the operator's own ferry, the Danny J — 28 passengers, a midday or an evening round trip, booked at the Homer Spit office. West Ismailof Island, where the restaurant sits, is privately owned, and the operator states that water taxis do not service The Saltry unless you have overnight accommodation on the island. The season runs 23 May to 6 September 2026. Plan the evening around the ferry, or plan a different evening.
What does work is the Halibut Cove community float, roughly 1,000 feet of berthing in 10 to 15 feet of water — read the entrance first, because you enter from the east only; the west entrance is very foul and should only be used with local knowledge.
On the Spit itself, dining works from a slip. The Chart Room at Land's End sits at the end of the Homer Spit, a short walk from the harbour: take a berth and walk in. Across the bay, Kachemak Bay Wilderness Lodge and Tutka Bay Lodge receive guests by arrangement rather than by published visitor dockage, so call ahead rather than turn up.
The chart below runs Kachemak Bay from Seldovia and the south-shore coves across to the Spit, with the cable clearances and the shoal that soundings found two fathoms shallower than charted.
