The Sunreef 80 Sail NEXT is the boat that built the shipyard's reputation in electric sailing, and the numbers explain why. Three hundred and forty square metres of living space. A two-hundred-square-metre mainsail. Enough coachroof, bimini and hull surface for a solar array that genuinely runs a boat at anchor.
Who It's For
This is a boat for the owner who has already done the diesel circuit. You have cruised the Mediterranean, chartered the Caribbean, and know what you like. What you want next is a boat that does not need a fuel dock every few days and does not sound like a building site at seven in the morning.
It is also for someone who intends to use the boat. Sunreef publishes 23.87 m (78 ft 4 in) overall on an 11.53 m (37 ft 9 in) beam, CE design category A. This is a blue-water platform, not a dock showpiece.
Design and Layout
Three hundred and forty square metres of living space, spread across two hulls, a full-beam saloon and a cockpit the NEXT redesign extended aft. The bridgedeck is set high enough to keep the underside clear of the sea, which is what makes the saloon usable on passage rather than only at anchor.
The forward deck is specified either as traditional trampolines or as a cushioned bow terrace. Trampolines are lighter and let air and water through, which suits owners who intend to sail the boat hard. The terrace turns the bow into a second lounging area with more shelter. Both are offered on the same hull, so choose on how you plan to use it.
Sunreef publishes no cabin or head count for the 80. Layouts are drawn per owner — most carry a full-hull master with guest cabins opposite and separate crew access.
The Fuel Specification Is the Real Choice
Sunreef quotes fuel on the 80 Sail NEXT between 2,400 l and 6,000 l. That is a two-and-a-half-times spread.
Boats built at the top of that range are designed to motor a long way, and that is a legitimate specification. It is not, however, the boat the Eco badge is selling. Decide which one you are ordering, because the tanks are set at contract and the decision shapes how the whole drivetrain gets used.
Water capacity is 1,600 l. The classic version runs 2 × 249 hp to 2 × 280 hp diesels; the Eco version replaces them with electric motors and a lithium bank charged by solar, by hydrogeneration under sail, and by generators where specified.
What NEXT Changed
Sunreef's NEXT programme gave this hull a new superstructure with a shortened coachroof, an extended aft cockpit, and a saloon plan that opens both fore and aft. The shipyard's own range page now lists the boat as the Sunreef 80 NEXT.
If you are comparing an older 80 against a current one, that is the difference you are looking at — the hull and the systems carry over, the deck and interior architecture do not.
What Sunreef Does Not Tell You
Sunreef publishes no speed figure for any boat in its current range. No top speed, no cruise speed, no range — not on this model and not on any of the other thirteen we cover. That is unusual. Most yards at this level publish at least a cruise figure, and several publish full performance tables.
We have left those rows empty on the specification table rather than filling them with an estimate. If a broker or a listing hands you a precise Sunreef speed, ask where it came from, because it did not come from the shipyard.
The same applies to displacement, which Sunreef publishes for nothing in the range, and to draft, which it publishes for only three of the fourteen models. Get the numbers you need in writing before you sign a build contract. Sunreef will provide them — they simply are not on the website.
Where to Start
The 80 Eco is the strongest version of Sunreef's off-grid argument in a sailing hull, and the yard has delivered a lot of them. Buy it if you are running the boat with crew and you want the deck area for a serious array with the sail plan to make hydrogeneration meaningful.
Get the fuel specification and the draft figure confirmed in writing before you sign.
