What the Scout 330 LXF's Epoxy-Infused Stepped Hull Actually Buys You

The 33-foot center console market is where the honest questions start. Below this size you are buying a day boat and everyone knows it. Above it you are buying a second set of dock costs and a captain's worth of handling. Right here, in the low thirties, a buyer can get a hull that runs offshore in weather, seats a family in comfort, and still answers to one person on the throttles. The difficulty is that a dozen builders make a boat that looks like it does all three, and the spec sheets rarely tell you which ones actually do.

The Scout 330 LXF makes its argument in construction. This is one of the hulls Scout designates S-Class — its own label for the luxury models 33 feet and up — and Scout builds it with epoxy infusion and what it calls dual Scout Stepped Hull Technology. Those are the two claims the boat lives or dies on, so it is worth being precise about what each one is and is not.

What the deadrise and the weight are telling you

Twenty-four degrees of transom deadrise is a genuinely offshore number for a boat under 35 feet, and it is four degrees sharper than the 20 degrees Scout gives the 305 LXF. A sharper vee cuts chop better and rolls more at rest — that is the physics, and no marketing copy changes it. The 9,545-pound dry weight is the other half of the same sentence. Weight is what keeps a deep vee from pounding, and it is why a light 33-footer with the same deadrise on paper does not ride like this one.

The stepped hull is the third variable. Steps introduce air under the running surface to reduce wetted area and drag. What that buys, in Scout's own tested numbers, is visible below.

What Scout's performance bulletin actually shows

Scout publishes a separate bulletin for each engine package it tests: twin Yamaha 300s, twin Mercury 300s, twin Mercury 300s with Seakeeper, twin Mercury 400 V10s, and twin Yamaha 425s. On the twin Mercury Verado 300 sheet, Scout records a top speed of 55.2 mph at 6,000 rpm, 0–20 mph in 4.7 seconds, 0–30 mph in 7.6 seconds, and best fuel efficiency at 39.4 mph.

That best-efficiency point is the number to hold on to. A hull that is most efficient at 39.4 mph is a hull designed to be run hard, not babied. Scout also publishes an estimated range of 424 miles on that package and labels it, in its own footnote, as an estimate based on fuel consumption at optimal cruising speeds and sea conditions. It is a planning figure. Anyone quoting you a firmer range number for this hull is going beyond what the builder will put its name to.

Rated to 900 hp with a 600 hp cruising recommendation, the 330 LXF has meaningful headroom above the twin 300s in that bulletin. What you gain in acceleration you spend in fuel, and Scout's own recommendation points to 600 hp as the balance.

The boat you actually stand in

Standard equipment on the 330 LXF runs deeper than the category expects. The powder-coated patented T-top hardtop comes with a full windshield, six rocket launchers and LED rope lighting. The leaning post is a working station — three tackle drawers to port, a trash unit to starboard, a 65-quart slide-out cooler aft, a sink, countertop, cutting board and a fiberglass cooler box, with twin bucket helm seats and an armrest box. Heated helm seats are standard, not an option, which tells you Scout expects this boat to be used in shoulder-season weather.

Inside the console is a berth with an electric marine head, a 12-gallon holding tank with overboard discharge and dockside pump-out, and overhead lighting. A built-in vessel sink is available. Option-list highlights include a Zipwake interceptor system, a Seakeeper 2 DC version, outriggers and retractable rocket launchers.

Where it asks you to give something up

Fresh water. Twenty-two gallons is the ceiling on how long a full crew stays comfortable, and it is the single spec most likely to shape how you actually use the boat. The console berth is a berth, not a stateroom — real for a night, honest about not being more.

The 31-inch draft is also worth checking against your home water. That is a proper offshore running surface, and on thin flats or a shallow home channel at low tide it will be the number that matters more than any speed figure.

Who the 330 LXF is right for

The owner-operator who runs offshore in real conditions and wants build quality he can point to rather than take on faith. Scout is family owned, has been building in Summerville, South Carolina since 1989, and puts its carbon and epoxy work and its strength-to-weight results at the front of its own materials. If you have run a conventional deep-vee 33 and want to know what the step and the infused hull change, this is the boat that answers the question.

It is also, importantly, still a boat one person docks. At 32'9" on a 10'6" beam, the 330 LXF stays within reach of an owner who does not want to hire out the running of his own weekend.
