Steel is a choice, not a default. At 146 feet a builder can go aluminium or composite, and for the Motopanfilo 45M, Benetti went to steel with an aluminium superstructure. That decision shapes everything else about the boat, so it is the right place to start.
The 45M is the larger of the two Motopanfilos: 146 feet 2 inches overall, 29 feet 10 inches of beam, 8 feet of draft, 430 tons at full load. It has not been delivered. Every image the yard has published is a rendering, so what you are looking at is design intent — a specification you can still have a hand in, not a boat somebody has already had a season on.
Who It's For
This is a boat for an owner who is commissioning rather than shopping. You are choosing a hull that is still being built, which means choosing layout, finish and a delivery slot instead of picking from what is on the water this month. That is a different kind of patience, and it is the only way to get this particular boat.
It also suits an owner whose cruising is measured in weeks. Five guest cabins for ten. Nine crew in five cabins. That crew number is not the 37M's seven rounded up — it is the complement of a boat expected to run long passages and keep working when it arrives.
If you want the Motopanfilo profile and 146 feet is more boat than your program needs, the 37M is the same idea 25 feet shorter, in GRP and carbon, with a 6-foot-5-inch draft. Look at that one instead. There is no prize for buying more length than you will use.
Why Steel
Steel is heavier than the alternatives for the same volume. You pay that weight in displacement — 430 tons at full load, against the 37M's 230 — and what you get back is mass and stiffness in a hull drawn for distance.
It also sets the rest of the specification. The 8-foot draft follows from the weight, and so does the read on the engines. The twin MAN V12-1400 package, 1,400 horsepower a side, is the same pairing the much lighter 37M carries. On a steel displacement hull of this weight that is a passage-making installation, not a sprinting one, and the shared engine tells you plainly what each of the two boats is being asked to do.
The Decks Have Names
Benetti names three of them: the Veranda Deck, the Observation Deck above it, and the Sun Deck above that. The Veranda Deck is the model's signature and the reason the profile carries the way it does. The yard has not detailed how it works, so the honest description is that it exists and that the boat is organized around it. Form your opinion by walking it, which on a hull still in build means the yard's drawings and its model.
The master suite sits on the upper deck. Interiors are by Lazzarini & Pickering Architetti, the naval architecture is Pierluigi Ausonio's, and the exterior and concept come from Benetti's own R&D department working with Ausonio and RWD.
Range, and the Speed It Is Stated At
Benetti publishes 4,100 nautical miles of range at 10 knots. Ten knots is the speed the yard states that figure at, and it is the number to plan around — 300 miles further than the 37M, on a hull 25 feet longer and close to twice the full-load displacement.
Fuel capacity is 14,529 gallons; water, 2,113. Those tanks are what make the range figure mean something in practice. They are sized for the kind of trip where the next fuel dock is a decision rather than an assumption.
What Nine Crew Tells You
Ten guests in five cabins, seven heads, and nine crew berthed in five cabins of their own. Nine is a full complement: a professional operation with a real watch rotation, not a couple and a captain.
Read the crew count as a specification rather than a line item. It tells you the yard expects this boat to move, to keep guests aboard while it does, and to arrive ready to go again. If your plan is one mooring for the summer, this is more boat and more program than that plan needs.
Where to Start
The Motopanfilo 45M is the classic Benetti silhouette with steel underneath it and a build slot in front of it. If you want the profile, you want the range, and you have the patience for a hull that is still being built, it deserves a conversation.
Start by deciding between the two Motopanfilos honestly: 121 feet in GRP and carbon with a shallower draft, or 146 feet in steel with nine crew. They look like the same boat from a distance. They are not the same purchase.
