The Benetti B.YOND Series

The voyager line — steel and aluminium hybrids with 5,000 nm of range, at 131 and 187 feet

The itinerary you keep not doing is the one that needs range. B.YOND is the part of the Benetti range built for owners who intend to leave: steel hulls with aluminium superstructures, Siemens E-Mode hybrid propulsion, and 5,000 nautical miles at 10 knots on both models. The hybrid system is the real argument for the line. It lets the boat manoeuvre in harbour and sit at anchor on electric power rather than running generators through dinner, which changes the evenings more than any interior specification does.

We review both B.YOND models: the 130'11" 40M and the 187'0" 57M. Lobanov exterior lines over Bonetti/Kozerski interiors on each, twin MAN diesels, a 12-knot cruise, and 8'10" of draft on both. The 40M carries ten guests in five cabins at 480 GT with nine crew in six cabins. The 57M carries ten to twelve guests in five or six cabins at 1,020 GT, with thirteen crew in eight.

Moving Up the B.YOND Series

Two boats, one draft. Both B.YONDs sit 8'10" deep and both are rated at 5,000 nautical miles at 10 knots, so stepping from the 40M to the 57M costs you no anchorages and no reach. That is unusual in any range, and it is worth understanding before you shop the line on length alone.

The 40M is the entry point and the more interesting boat for an owner who wants a small operation: 130'11", 480 GT, ten guests in five cabins, nine crew in six, twin MAN V12-1400s and 66,000 litres of fuel. The 57M is what you buy when the boat has to carry more people for longer. It doubles the volume to 1,020 GT, takes up to twelve guests in six cabins and thirteen crew in eight, and carries 80,000 litres of fuel plus 15,000 litres of fresh water — tankage that matters as much as the berths once you are weeks from a decent yard. Buy the 40M for autonomy with a manageable crew. Buy the 57M when the guest list and the crew rotation both need room.

Our Take

The 40M is my favourite Benetti, full stop. It is a 130-footer with a steel hull, 480 gross tons and 5,000 nautical miles of range at 10 knots, which means it does the job of a much larger boat with nine crew instead of seventeen. Everything about it reads like the engineers won the argument: the E-Mode hybrid, the four-deck layout, the Lobanov exterior that looks like a working vessel rather than a jewellery box. If I were buying one Benetti to actually use, this is the one.

The trade-off to price in early is speed. Top speed is 14 knots and the cruise is 12, so you do not outrun weather in this boat. You plan around it, and sometimes you go through it. That suits some owners perfectly and makes others miserable by the second season, so be honest about which one you are before you sign.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far can a Benetti B.YOND go without refuelling?

Five thousand nautical miles at 10 knots, and it is the same figure for both models. The 40M carries 66,000 litres of fuel and the 57M carries 80,000, with 15,000 litres of fresh water on the larger boat. That covers a transatlantic crossing with the reserve you want rather than the reserve you check twice.

What the number really buys is routing freedom. You stop building an itinerary around where diesel is available at a price you will accept, and you stop repositioning on a fuel schedule instead of a weather window. In the 130-foot class especially that autonomy is rare, and it is the reason the line exists at all.

How many crew do you need to run a B.YOND 40M?

Nine, and the yacht is drawn with six crew cabins to house them. That is a genuinely small operation for a 130'11" yacht of 480 gross tons carrying ten guests in five cabins, and it is a large part of why the 40M suits owners who want long trips without running a company alongside them.

The four-deck layout is what makes the number work. Guest and crew routes are kept separate, so a small team can service the boat without cutting through the spaces guests are using. Fewer crew also means a shorter rotation to manage and less turnover risk, which over a ten-week season shapes the experience more than any interior specification.

What does the Siemens E-Mode hybrid system actually do on a B.YOND?

It lets the yacht run on electric power at low speed and at anchor, so the boat can manoeuvre in harbour and hold hotel loads overnight without the main engines or generators turning. Both B.YOND models are built around it, and on the 40M the package is credited with a 24% reduction in fuel consumption.

The benefit owners notice first is not the fuel. It is silence: no generator drone through dinner, no vibration through the aft cabins at three in the morning, no exhaust haze hanging over the swim platform. The efficiency case pays back across a season. The quiet pays back every night you are aboard.

Is a 12-knot cruise speed too slow for a yacht this size?

It depends on whether you plan around weather or try to beat it. The 40M tops out at 14 knots and the 57M at 16, and both cruise at 12. In a steel displacement yacht that is a deliberate choice: the hull is built to hold a comfortable speed through a sea state, not to sprint away from one.

Owners coming off fast planing boats feel the difference in the first season. You leave earlier, you read the forecast harder, and you accept that a passage takes the days it takes. In return you get a hull that keeps its motion civil offshore and fuel numbers that make long legs an ordinary decision rather than an event.
