EX is where Tiara puts the engines back under the cockpit. Two boats carry the name - the EX 54 at 54' 3" and the EX 60 at 60' 3" - and both run Volvo Penta IPS diesel pods on a joystick.
Tiara describes the class as a tribute to its own history: the exterior thinking comes from its outboard yachts, where the deck is the point, and the accommodation comes from its inboard heritage, where staying aboard is assumed. That is how a 54-footer you drive yourself ends up with three separate staterooms.
The aft cockpit is ordered rather than accepted. Both boats take a social configuration, an adventure module with tender and toy stowage, or a glass patio that extends finished, glazed living space aft. It changes the back third of the boat, so make the decision at order.

Moving Up the EX Series
EX 54 - 54' 3" overall with the integrated platform, 15' 11" beam, 4' 4" draft, 48,400 lbs dry. Twin Volvo Penta IPS2-950 diesels at 725 hp each through 1.7:1 gears on P4 propellers, 650 gallons of fuel, 135 of fresh water, a 68-gallon holding tank, 14 degrees of deadrise at the transom. Wide open throttle is 38.7 mph at 2,561 rpm on 74.2 gallons an hour; optimum cruise is 26.0 mph on 44.3 gph or 30.6 mph on 53.7, worth 344 and 334 statute miles. Three staterooms sleeping six adults and two heads below, twin terraces opening the cockpit outboard on both sides, and a swim platform with integrated steps.
EX 60 - 60' 3", 16' 11" beam, 5' 1" draft, 57,500 lbs dry. Twin Volvo Penta D13 IPS1350 diesels at 1,000 hp each through 1.88:1 gears on Q6 propellers, 700 gallons of fuel, 150 of water, an 86-gallon holding tank, the same 14 degrees of deadrise. Wide open throttle is 46.1 mph at 2,454 rpm on 102.3 gallons an hour; optimum cruise is 28.9 mph on 52.0 gph for 350 statute miles, or 36.6 mph on 71.2. Three staterooms and two heads again, with the Interceptor Trim System and Active Ride Control running on Volvo's Electronic Vessel Control. It is the largest boat Tiara has produced.
Six feet of length buys a full foot of beam, and the beam is where the extra accommodation volume comes from rather than the length. It also buys 7.4 mph on top. Cruise range lands within six statute miles across the two boats, so the bigger one is not the shorter-legged one.
Our Take
At this size the question stops being about the boat and starts being about crew. Both EX boats are drawn on the assumption there is none - pods on a joystick, one helm built to be sat at for hours, and on the 60 an Active Ride Control system doing the trimming for you. That is the argument for the class, and it is a good one.
The comparison inside the class is unusually clean, because Tiara ran both boats and published both sheets. The EX 54 does 38.7 mph on 650 gallons behind twin 725s. The EX 60 does 46.1 on 700 gallons behind twin 1,000s, on a full foot more beam - and the beam is where the extra volume comes from, not the length. Both give you three staterooms and two heads. Both put salon and galley on one level with the sight lines open to the helm, so the person driving stays in the room.
What I would decide on is the cruise band rather than the top speed. The 54 is happiest at 26 to 30 mph, the 60 at 29 to 37, and the 60's efficiency peak sits right where you would want to run it all day - 0.56 statute miles per gallon at 28.9 mph against 0.45 flat out. Neither boat rewards being pushed. If the top number is what you are shopping, the outboard LS boats are the other side of this range and the 46 LS is published at 59.0 mph.
Two things to settle on the water rather than on paper. Dock a pod boat in a crosswind, in a slip the width of the one you actually keep, before you form an opinion about joysticks. And run Active Ride Control on and off in the same conditions on the same day, and form your own view of it.
