The Sanlorenzo Steel Series

The pioneering spirit

Sanlorenzo Steel yacht

When you need genuine ocean capability and the volume that only steel delivers, this is Sanlorenzo's answer. The yard has spent more than fifteen years redefining what steel could be, and describes the line today as spanning 50 to 74 metres and standing as the most defined and desirable in its segment.

The model we have reviewed here is the one where that pioneering claim has actual substance: the 58Steel carries the first diesel-electric propulsion system in the range, with twin E-Pods and — Sanlorenzo's own figures — around 10% lower emissions, up to two hours of quiet cruising and up to eight hours of zero-emission hotel mode at anchor.

Sanlorenzo's Steel line runs to five models: the 50Steel, 52Steel Neo, 58Steel, 64Steel and 74Steel. We have reviewed one of them. This hub covers the 58Steel; the rest of the line is not yet written up, so read this as one boat rather than the range.

Moving Up the Steel Series

58Steel — 191'1", 1,165 GT, 15 knots, 10 guests / 13 crew. Twin E-Pods at 850 kW each, diesel-electric, and 80,000 litres of fuel. The first hybrid system in Sanlorenzo's steel line.

50Steel, 52Steel Neo, 64Steel and 74Steel — not yet reviewed. Sanlorenzo's steel range runs from 50 to 74 metres. We will add them here as they are written up.

One point of confusion to head off, because it costs people money: the 57Steel is not the 58Steel. The 58Steel is nearly six feet longer, a foot wider, and runs an entirely different propulsion system — E-Pods in place of the 57Steel's twin CAT 3512C diesels. They share a fuel capacity and very little else.

Our Take

The 58Steel is the boat in this range I would want to see in person, because the diesel-electric system is not a badge. Eight hours of hotel mode at anchor with the generators off changes what a night on board sounds like, and Sanlorenzo has been specific enough about the claim that you can hold them to it.

I would go into it with my eyes open about newness. A first-in-line propulsion system on a well-run boat is usually fine; the question is who commissions it, who services it where you keep the boat, and what the yard says about the battery and power-electronics lifecycle. Ask those three before you ask anything about the interior.

Worth knowing about the yard's own material too: the specification block gives a beam of 11.25 metres while the descriptive copy on the same page says 10.8. Both are Sanlorenzo's. That is a good reminder to take the numbers that matter — beam, draft, weights — from the build documents rather than from any website, this one included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Sanlorenzo 57Steel the same boat as the 58Steel?

No, and the difference matters when you are comparing figures. The 58Steel is 58.25 metres, nearly six feet longer than the 57Steel, about a foot wider, and runs an entirely different propulsion system — twin diesel-electric E-Pods where the 57Steel ran twin CAT 3512C diesels. The two share a fuel capacity of 80,000 litres and very little else. If someone quotes 57Steel figures against a 58Steel, or the reverse, that is not a rounding difference between model years.

What is different about the Sanlorenzo 58Steel's propulsion?

The 58Steel carries the first diesel-electric propulsion system in Sanlorenzo's steel line: twin E-Pods rated at 850 kW each. Sanlorenzo publishes three specific claims for it — emissions reduced by around ten per cent, up to two hours of quiet cruising, and up to eight hours of zero-emission hotel mode at anchor. That last figure is the one that changes a night aboard, because it means lights and air conditioning without the generators running.
