Most boat buyers are eventually forced into a choice they resent. Buy the centre console and you can fish anywhere, but nobody wants to spend a second night aboard. Buy the express cruiser and you get the cabin and the air conditioning, and then discover there is nowhere to put a wet rod or a bleeding fish.
SAV stands for Sports Activity Vessel, and it is Regal's refusal to make you pick. The idea is a hull and deck laid out for fishing — insulated fish boxes, rod holders, a convertible transom, outboards you can tilt out of skinny water — wrapped around the accommodation of a cruiser, with proper cabins, a separate walk-in shower and a helm inside a climate-controlled salon.
We review one in depth: the 50 SAV, the flagship of the line at 50'5". Regal also builds the 34, 38 and 43 SAV, so the 50 sits at the top of a longer range rather than standing alone in Regal's catalogue.

Moving Up the SAV Series
The 50 SAV is the flagship, and the numbers behind it are unusually well documented. It runs 50'5" on a 14'7" beam with 18 degrees of deadrise on the hull Regal calls OceanTrac, weighs 33,500 lbs dry and carries 700 gallons — the largest tank of any boat we review from this yard. Triple Mercury V12 600 Verado outboards put 1,800 horsepower on the transom.
Regal's own test sheet records 56.7 mph flat out at 6,400 RPM, which makes it the fastest Regal on this site, and marks the economy row at 33.4 mph at 4,000 RPM burning 58.1 gallons an hour for 0.57 miles per gallon — roughly 360 statute miles with a ten percent reserve. Draft is 29 inches with the drives up and 49 inches down, so a 50-footer gets into water most 50-footers cannot.
The fishing side is not decoration: twenty-two rod holders, dual insulated fish boxes, deep-drop outlets, outriggers and a convertible transom. The cruising side is not decoration either: a king aft stateroom, a convertible forward berth, a head with full standing room and a separate walk-in shower, and air-conditioned and heated mezzanine seating. Dual electric terrace doors fold the cockpit sides down to the water, and Regal LivePower runs the boat's daytime electrical load off lithium-ion batteries so the generator only starts when it is actually needed.

Our Take
The SAV is the only category on this site I would describe as genuinely new rather than a rebadge, and the 50 is the boat that proves the argument. Every builder claims versatility. Very few will put twenty-two rod holders and a king berth with a walk-in shower on the same 50-foot hull and then publish a test sheet showing it still does 56.7 mph.
What I would actually buy it for is the terrace doors and the mezzanine. The doors fold the cockpit sides down electrically and put you at water level, which changes what the boat is for — diving, swimming, landing a fish, letting kids in and out — in a way a swim platform never quite does. The mezzanine seat is air-conditioned and heated, which sounds absurd until you have sat in one at eight in the morning twenty miles offshore.
Be honest with yourself about the running costs, though. Eighteen hundred horsepower drinks: 58 gallons an hour at the economy cruise and 164 at wide-open throttle. The 700-gallon tank gives you about 360 statute miles, which is real range, but you are paying for it. If you genuinely fish offshore and genuinely cruise, this boat replaces two others and the maths works. If you mostly do one of those, buy the boat built for that one and spend the difference on fuel.
