Quick Verdict

  • Triple outboards give the 42 XO a 25-inch draft with the drives up, roughly a foot and a half less than the sterndrive 42 Grande Coupe on the same hull, which is what puts sandbars and shallow anchorages in reach
  • The full-beam lazarette stands 42 inches high where the engine room would sit on the Grande Coupe, with a fitted organisation system — the most usable stowage in any 42-footer we cover
  • Retractable hardtop, sliding glass enclosure doors and opening side windows turn the upper salon and aft cockpit into one space, with an optional Seakeeper 3 to steady it at anchor
  • Regal publishes no performance report and no engine option list for the 42 XO, so this page shows no speed, fuel-burn or range figures — ask the dealer for the test sheet in writing

Our Take

The 42 XO earns its place by what it does not have on board. Regal builds this same 42-foot hull as the Grande Coupe with Volvo IPS pods and as the FXO with a flybridge, but hanging the engines off the transom buys you two things nothing else in the range offers: a 25-inch draft with the drives up, and a full-beam lazarette 42 inches high where the engine room would otherwise sit. The first one gets you onto sandbars and into anchorages a 42-foot sport yacht has no business reaching. The second swallows the dive gear, the paddleboards and the spare props that normally end up lashed to the foredeck. If you cruise the Bahamas or Florida's Gulf Coast, that combination is the whole argument.

Now the part I would want to know before writing a cheque. Regal publishes a full RPM-by-RPM performance test report for almost every boat it builds — three of them for the 36 Grande Coupe alone — and it publishes nothing for the 42 XO. No test sheet, no engine option list, not even a horsepower figure on the model page. I have quoted the triple Yamaha F425 XTOs because Regal's own 42 FXO report names them on the same platform, but I am not going to hand you a top speed or a range I cannot source, so this page carries neither. Ask your dealer for the 42 XO's test sheet in writing, and treat any number that arrives without one as a sales figure.

Everything else here is the Regal you would expect at this size. The retractable hardtop and sliding glass doors turn the upper salon into open deck in about fifteen seconds, the Seakeeper 3 option takes the roll out of a lunch stop, and two people can run the boat without a third set of hands. This is a boat for the owner stepping off a big centre console who wants two staterooms and air conditioning without giving up the water they already fish. If that is you, it is a genuinely good boat with an information problem — and the information problem is fixable with a phone call.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast is the Regal 42 XO?

Regal does not publish a top speed for the 42 XO, so this site does not quote one. It is the only model in the range without a performance test report, and its page carries no engine option list or horsepower figure either. Any speed you are given for this boat should come with the test sheet behind it — ask your dealer to put the figures in writing.

How shallow can the Regal 42 XO go?

Draft is 25 inches with the drives up and 44 inches with them down. That is an inch shallower than the smaller 38 XO and twenty inches shallower than the pod-driven 42 Grande Coupe built on the same hull, which is the whole reason the outboard version exists. It is what lets a 42-foot cruiser get close to a sandbar.

How much storage does the Regal 42 XO have?

The lazarette runs the full beam of the boat and stands 42 inches high, with a fitted shelving and drawer system, in the space a sterndrive engine room would otherwise fill. It is the largest single stowage space in any 42-footer reviewed on this site, and it swallows dive gear, paddleboards and spares that would otherwise be strapped to the foredeck.

What engines does the Regal 42 XO use?

Triple Yamaha F425 XTO outboards. Regal names no engines at all on the 42 XO's own page; that designation comes from the yard's performance report for the 42 FXO, which is built on the same 42-foot outboard platform. A previously recorded triple Yamaha F450 option had no manufacturer source anywhere on regalboats.com and is not listed here.
