Dock & Dine in Sag Harbor & Shelter Island
Arriving by boat splits cleanly in two here, and the split is whether you can walk.
Sag Harbor is a walk-off market. You take a Village berth or a club berth, climb the ramp, and the village is right there. The famous village restaurants own no docks because they have never needed one — the berths are the dock, and everything is within a few streets of them.
Shelter Island is the opposite, and it has to be. There is no walkable village waterfront on the West Neck and Coecles side, so the restaurants that want boat trade own the dock themselves. That gives the market its one published policy — and it is both paid and timed. SALT Waterfront Bar & Grill, at Island Boatyard on West Neck Harbor, states that "All boats arriving for Salt are subject to a charge, $1.00/ft, 25/ft minimum" and that "There is a TWO HOUR MAXIMUM STAY." Read that as a lunch stop with the clock running, not an evening ashore, and plan your table time accordingly.
The island's other waterfront houses — Ram's Head Inn and Sunset Beach among them — work the way Shelter Island has always worked: arrange the arrival with the house on the telephone, or take a mooring and go in by tender.

Dockage notes are what each restaurant publishes on its own site — space is first-come and dinner-hour rafting is real, so hail ahead. Where a venue states nothing about docking, we say so rather than guess.
