Dock & Dine in Newport

← Back to the Newport guide

Newport's wharf restaurants are famous and almost none of them have a dock. That is how the harbour works, and knowing it saves you an embarrassing approach.

The Mooring, Clarke Cooke House, 22 Bowen's, The Landing, Midtown Oyster: every one of them sits on the water, and none of them keeps a guest dock. You reach them by tender from a mooring, or you walk from a berth. With mooring fields run by the City and by Oldport Marine across Brenton Cove and the main harbour, and a launch service at $4 to a moored boat, that is the normal way to have dinner ashore here.

Where you can genuinely tie up and eat, the venue is a marina first. Forty 1° North publishes dockage for yachts up to 250 ft and offers dockside dining on board. Belle's sits inside the shipyard. The restaurants on Goat Island belong to a resort marina that takes 240 ft across 22 slips. In each case you are buying a berth, and the table comes with it.

One arrival worth getting right: Castle Hill Inn, out on Ocean Drive, runs its own motor launch rather than guest dockage — the M/V Mistress, departing the Castle Hill Marina and landing at the Ann Street Pier at $15 per adult. That is a passenger service rather than a dock, so confirm the sailing times by phone before you plan an evening around one.

The stops, as their own docks describe them

Dockage notes are what each restaurant publishes on its own site — space is first-come and dinner-hour rafting is real, so hail ahead. Where a venue states nothing about docking, we say so rather than guess.
