Dock & Dine in Hilton Head
Arriving by boat for lunch in the Lowcountry works, and it pays to know which venues hold a dock for diners and which mean berth-at-the-marina-then-walk. It saves an awkward approach on a seven-foot falling tide.
Palmetto Bay Marina is the real thing, and it is unambiguous: its four waterfront venues — Black Marlin Bayside Grill, Carolina Crab Company, Palmetto Bay Sunrise Cafe and The Hurricane Bar — sit behind the marina's own statement that it has designated dock space just for Dock & Dine, with a call-ahead number and VHF Channel 16 as the way in. The dockage lives with the marina rather than with the restaurants, so make the call to the marina.
Morgan River Grill at Dataw Island Marina is reached through the marina's day dock on St. Helena Island — a short and scenic run off the ICW, with space explicitly limited and advance notice requested.
Two more are reached through a marina you are already paying: the Quarterdeck and the Harbour Town Bakery sit inside Sea Pines at Harbour Town Yacht Basin, so arrival is through the yacht basin — which publishes a 50 ft minimum boat length for dockage, a line worth a phone call if your boat is smaller. Old Daufuskie Crab Company is reached through Freeport Marina on Daufuskie, where a day docking fee of $10 per private vessel is about as simple as arriving by boat gets.
And then the ones everybody assumes have a dock. Up the Creek Pub, Skull Creek Boathouse, Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks and Saltus River Grill on the Beaufort waterfront all work the same way, and it is a good way: take a berth at the marina alongside, then walk. Hudson's is the one people get wrong most often — the docks in the name are its own fishing fleet's, not yours.

Dockage notes are what each restaurant publishes on its own site — space is first-come and dinner-hour rafting is real, so hail ahead. Where a venue states nothing about docking, we say so rather than guess.
