If someone walks in with the budget and no fixed idea, I put them on the 380 Outrage. Here is the claim you can argue with: the 380 Realm is the same 38'0" x 11'8" hull, and the enclosed helm costs you 2,500 lbs — 17,000 lbs dry against the Outrage's 14,500 — plus five and a half inches of draft, 29" versus 23.5". You are paying weight and shallow-water access for a windshield. I would rather have the lighter boat and a good jacket. The 380 Outrage also takes up to 1,700 hp and will run 65.0 mph on quad 400 V10s, and it still holds 445 gallons and 16 people. That is a lot of boat that has not been asked to be a house.
I will give the other side its due, because it is a real argument and not a courtesy. If you run in the Northeast or the Pacific Northwest, or you take the boat out in November because that is when the fish are there, the Realm's enclosed helm changes how many days a year you actually go. That is worth more than 2,500 lbs on a spec sheet. The honest test is not which boat is better — it is whether you are buying a fishing boat that occasionally cruises, or a cruiser that occasionally fishes. Outrage for the first, Realm for the second, Conquest if the answer is genuinely both and someone has to sleep in a real berth. Answer that question first and the rest of the range sorts itself out in about ten minutes.

On seven of the eight models covered here, yes. The 325 Conquest sleeps four or more in a convertible V-berth plus a mid double berth, and the 405 Conquest has a private master stateroom with a mid-berth for three and an enclosed head with a separate shower. The 350 Realm and 380 Realm each have one cabin and one head. In the Outrage line, the 360, 380 and 420 all have cabins — the 360 with a berth and 12,000 BTU air conditioning, the 380 with a convertible settee/double berth, and the 420 with a convertible double plus a pull-out settee and a rain shower. The exception is the 330 Outrage: it is an open center console with no cabin, though it does carry a VacuFlush head inside the console.
Between 600 and 1,800 hp depending on the model, and the minimum ratings matter more than the maximums. The 330 Outrage and 325 Conquest both start at 600 hp and top out at 850. The 360 Outrage and 380 Outrage start at 900, with the 380 rated to 1,700. The 350 Realm starts at 750 and runs to 1,275. The 380 Realm, 420 Outrage and 405 Conquest all start at 1,200 hp, with the 420 and 405 rated to 1,800. Whalers are heavy for their length — the 420 Outrage is 22,000 lbs dry and 29,500 lbs loaded — so the published minimum is a genuine floor, not a budget option. Rigging near the top of the range is normal on these boats rather than excessive.
Outrage is the open center console fishing line, Realm is an express cruiser built on Outrage hulls with an enclosed helm, and Conquest is the cabin cruiser line with real staterooms. Outrage runs 33'0" to 42'6" across the 330, 360, 380 and 420. Realm covers the 35'6" 350 and 38'0" 380, each with one cabin and one head. Conquest is the 32'3" 325 and the 41'4" 405, the latter with a private master stateroom plus a mid-berth for three. The clearest comparison is the 380, which exists in both Outrage and Realm form on the same 38'0" x 11'8" hull: the Outrage is 14,500 lbs dry and draws 23.5", the Realm is 17,000 lbs and draws 29". Same platform, two different lives.
Since 1958. The company was founded on June 5 of that year by Richard "Dick" Fisher, who developed the Unibond foam-cored construction method with input from naval architect C. Raymond Hunt and launched a 13-footer at the 1958 New York Boat Show. The core idea has not changed in more than sixty-five years: closed-cell foam bonded between fiberglass skins, marketed today as WhalerStep. The series names carry their own history. Outrage dates to a 21-foot center console in 1970, the first Whaler built beyond the original 13- and 16-foot boats. Conquest began in 1997 as a 23-foot walkaround. Realm is the newest of the three, introduced with the 350 Realm in 2018 as an express layout that was neither center console nor conventional cruiser.
Yes, and the mechanism is simple enough to check yourself. Every hull is built with a high-density closed-cell foam core bonded between two fiberglass skins, so buoyancy is part of the structure rather than something bolted in. Fill the boat with water and it still floats, right side up, supporting the people aboard. Boston Whaler proved this in public in May 1961, when founder Dick Fisher had one of his 13-footers sawed in half beneath him for Life magazine and motored away in the stern section. The demonstration has been repeated with chainsaws ever since. On a modern 42'6" 420 Outrage the foam is doing quieter work too — a solid laminate with no hollow voids is stiff and silent underway, which is most of why a Whaler sounds different from a comparable boat at speed.
