Twelve people said yes. The swim terrace is down, both grills are lit, and nobody has had to climb over anybody to get in the water. That is the entire design brief of the Sea Ray SLX 400 Outboard, and the builder is refreshingly direct about it — Sea Ray calls this boat "The Entertainer."
What is less obvious is how much engineering went into making that possible.
Who It's For
This is the buyer who already knows what a 38-footer feels like on a busy weekend. You have done the arithmetic on how many people actually turn up. You want the cockpit of a 45-footer without the draft, and you want outboards without giving up finish quality.
You are also the buyer who wants shallow water on the table. With the engines trimmed up the draft is 32 inches; trimmed down it is 45. That is a real difference in where the boat can go on a Saturday.
Design & Layout
The layout is organised around one idea: keep everybody in the same conversation. The cockpit social zone carries a well-appointed wet bar with a refrigerator, a sink and available dual electric grills, positioned so the person pouring is still facing the seating rather than turning their back on it.
The fold-down swim terrace is the piece that makes the boat. It opens to extend the cockpit all the way to the water, which changes how people move around at anchor more than any amount of extra beam would.
Forward, the bow has generous seating with a removable table and dedicated storage for it. Below, Sea Ray describes a "robust cabin" with berths and an enclosed head, and the specification block gives a 28-gallon holding tank — but the builder publishes no berth count and no "sleeps" row for this model, so go and look rather than assume. Fathom e-Power is available here too: a Mastervolt lithium-ion pack in place of a generator, good for roughly eight hours of accessory load on a full charge.
One inconsistency to resolve at the dealer: Sea Ray's own page for this boat promises "Dual Digital Dash w/ standard 16-inch Simrad Touchscreen displays" in one passage and "dual 9-inch (optional 12-inch) Simrad touchscreen displays" in another. Confirm the screen size on your build sheet rather than the web page.
Performance
Two engine packages. Standard is triple Mercury 300 Verado V8 outboards with Joystick Piloting and e-Steering. Optional is twin Mercury 600 Verado 7.6L V12s — 1,200 horsepower, and the reason this is the halo boat in the range. The V12s carry a steerable gearcase that improves handling at low speed, and two engines instead of three simplifies everything behind them.
Sea Ray publishes no performance figures for the SLX 400 Outboard. No cruising speed, no wide-open throttle, no range. The specification block gives length, beam, fuel, propulsion, draft up and down, dry weight, deadrise, water and holding tank, and ends there.
We had estimated numbers on this page before. They are gone. Every speed and range figure in circulation for this boat — including the ones we were carrying — is somebody's guess, and a guess is worth less to you than an honest gap.
What Sea Ray does publish is a 21-degree deadrise and 375 gallons of fuel. Take those two, run the boat at the speed you would actually hold, read the fuel flow off the Mercury display, and you will have a better range figure than anything printed anywhere.
The Quiet Ride hull architecture is standard, aimed at cutting noise and vibration on longer runs. On a boat this size that is a comfort feature with real consequences — a two-hour run where you can hold a conversation is a different day from one where you cannot.
Ownership
The SLX 400 Outboard is an owner-operated boat, but it is a 20,678-pound owner-operated boat with a 12-foot beam. Joystick Piloting makes close quarters manageable; it does not make the boat small. Be honest with yourself about the marina you keep it in.
The outboard configuration does simplify service. Most maintenance happens at the transom — oil changes, lower unit service, prop work — rather than through a hatch. The twin 600 package cuts that in half again.
The warranty is the detail most buyers miss. Sea Ray runs two schemes: five-year SURPA5S+ for SPX, SDX and SLX Sport Boats, and three-year SENTIN3L for Sundancers. The SLX 400 and SLX 400 Outboard are explicitly excluded from the five-year scheme and covered under the three-year terms instead — with a 10-year Limited Structural Hull/Deck warranty to the original owner on top. In warranty terms, Sea Ray files this boat with the cruisers, not the sport boats.
Where to Start
Run both engine packages if you can. The twin 600 V12 setup and the triple 300 setup are different boats to drive and different boats to own, and the difference is not something a brochure can convey.
Then spend time in the cockpit with the swim terrace deployed and the boat at anchor. That is where this boat separates itself, and it is the only place you can judge whether the premium makes sense for how you will use it.
