Moving Up the Explorer Series

500Exp — 154'2", under 500 GT, 15 knots, 10 guests / 9 crew. Twin CAT C32 ACERT diesels and 65,000 litres of fuel: the largest tankage-to-length ratio in the Sanlorenzo fleet, and the reason this boat can go where it claims to.

Sanlorenzo keeps the 500Exp deliberately under 500 gross tons, which has real consequences for survey and manning obligations depending on flag and use — and is very likely why the design sits exactly where it does.

Our Take

The 500Exp is one of a small number of yachts in this size range that was drawn as an explorer from the keel up rather than restyled into one. You can see it in the fuel capacity: 65,000 litres on 154 feet is not a motor yacht's tankage.

Now the correction, and it is the most important thing on this page. You will see "4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots" attached to this boat almost everywhere. That is not Sanlorenzo's figure. The yard publishes no range for the 500Exp, no cruise speed, no draft and no displacement — the same across its entire fleet. The number may well be close to right. But nobody planning an ocean crossing should be working from a figure whose origin they cannot name, and an explorer buyer of all people should refuse to.

Do it properly instead. Take observed consumption from a sea trial at the speed you intend to hold, divide the published 65,000 litres by it, keep a serious reserve, and you will have a range you can defend to your insurer and to yourself. Then ask about redundancy — generators, steering, watermakers — because an explorer's real specification is its spares list, not its top speed.

Does the Sanlorenzo 500Exp really have a 4,000-mile range?

Sanlorenzo does not publish a range figure for the 500Exp, so the widely quoted four thousand nautical miles at eleven knots is not the builder's number. It may well be close to correct, but no one planning an ocean passage should work from a figure whose origin they cannot establish. What Sanlorenzo does publish is a fuel capacity of 65,000 litres on a 154-foot hull, which is the largest tankage-to-length ratio in its fleet. Pair that with observed consumption from a sea trial and you have a defensible range.
