The 500Exp is one of the few yachts in this size range that was designed from the keel up to be an explorer, not a motor yacht with explorer styling. The steel hull and aluminum superstructure are built to take weather. The systems are robust. The engine room is laid out for access and maintenance, not just to pass survey. Sanlorenzo did not cut corners to hit a price point. They built a serious boat for serious use. The twin CAT C32 engines are proven, reliable, and parts are available worldwide. The 4,000-nautical-mile range at 11 knots is real, not marketing math. This is a boat you can take to remote destinations and trust to get you home.
This boat is for the owner who has a plan. If you want to spend six months in the South Pacific or a season in the Arctic, the 500Exp gives you the platform to do it. If you want to show up at the Monaco Yacht Show and turn heads, buy something else. The 500Exp does not photograph well. It does not have the sleek lines of a fast motor yacht. It looks like what it is, which is a ship. The ideal owner is someone who has already owned a few yachts, knows what they actually use, and is ready to commit to a boat that prioritizes capability over aesthetics. This is not a first yacht. This is a final yacht.
The resale market for the 500Exp is narrow but stable. Buyers in this category are not shopping on emotion. They are looking for a specific set of capabilities, and the 500Exp delivers. Maintenance costs are high because the systems are complex and the boat is built to go places where service is not readily available. You need to budget for a full-time crew, and you need to budget for the reality that parts and service in remote locations cost more. But if you are the right owner, the 500Exp holds its value better than most yachts in this size range because there are very few alternatives that offer the same combination of range, capability, and build quality. This is not a boat you flip in three years. This is a boat you keep.”
