You are not chasing anywhere in a weekend. You are planning three weeks somewhere, then probably somewhere else, and you want the boat to feel like home when you get there. You want crew quarters that are not punitive, a galley that works for real cooking, and enough tankage that fuel does not dictate the itinerary.
The Sanlorenzo SD90 was built for exactly that conversation.
Who it's for
This is a boat for owners who spend weeks aboard rather than weekends. Sanlorenzo's own designer puts it well: the navette is linked to a person who chooses to live at sea for a considerable amount of time, for whom that is not a limitation but a luxury.
It is also for owners who value being able to configure things. Sanlorenzo builds semi-custom, so you are working with the yard on layout, materials and systems rather than picking one of three packages. That takes time and it costs money, and the result is a boat that fits how you actually live.
It is not a boat for someone who prioritises speed. At 14 or 17 knots depending on the engines, you are not outrunning anything. You are going a long way in comfort, which is a different kind of freedom.
Design and layout
Zuccon International Project drew the exterior, and the yard's description is balanced proportions with an elegant presence: generous deck spaces, fluid transitions, a composed profile. It is a handsome boat in a quiet way, and the profile has aged better than most of what was launched alongside it.
Inside, Sanlorenzo talks about a calm, open atmosphere that unites social areas and private retreats through large glazing and considered circulation. On a boat meant for long stays, circulation is not a design flourish — it is the thing that decides whether you are still comfortable in week three.
Sanlorenzo shows two configurations for the SD90. Both carry identical figures; they differ in interior arrangement.
Performance: what Sanlorenzo publishes
Two engine packages. Standard is twin MAN i6 at 800 horsepower, for a published maximum of 14 knots. The option is twin MAN V8 at 1,200 horsepower, for a published maximum of 17 knots. Fuel 13,000 litres — 3,434 US gallons. Fresh water 2,000 litres. Eight guests, four crew. Length overall 27.43 metres, which is 90 feet 0 inches.
Sanlorenzo publishes no cruise speed, no range, no draft and no displacement, for the SD90 or for any model in its fleet. On a long-range boat that absence matters more than it would elsewhere, and it is worth saying plainly rather than filling the gap with an estimate. Every range figure you will see quoted for this boat was calculated by somebody who was not the builder.
You can do that arithmetic properly, though, and you should. Take the observed fuel burn from a sea trial at the speed you intend to run, divide 13,000 litres by it, keep a sensible reserve, and you will have a range number you can actually trust because you know where every part of it came from.
Ownership: the questions worth asking
The SD90 is not an owner-operator boat. Four crew berths and systems built around professional management tell you what the yard expects.
Ask for the sea trial report with fuel burn at each rpm step — on this boat more than most, because it is the only way to a real range figure. Ask which engine package the hull carries; the difference between the i6 and the V8 changes the boat's character, its consumption and its resale audience. Ask for the build specification for the draft, which you will need for anywhere shallow and for the insurance schedule.
Then ask about the semi-custom side. A thoughtfully specified SD90 finds a buyer. An oddly specified one sits. Look at the layout through the eyes of the next owner as well as your own.
Where to start
The SD90 is the right boat if you value range, space and configurability over speed. Decide the engine question first — it is the one choice that changes everything else — and make the sea trial sheet the document you buy on.
