Aquila under sail — the 50 Sail, four to six cabins and a 25'9" beam
If the boat is going to be the house for a season, the argument stops being about waterline and starts being about whether everyone aboard gets a door that closes. The 50 Sail is where Aquila answers that under sail rather than under power.
We review one boat here — the 50 Sail. It is 49'1" long on a 25'9" beam, it can be ordered with four, five or six cabins, each with its own head, shower and private entrance, and it carries 1,679 sq ft of upwind sail on an 82'6" rig, with twin 50 HP diesel saildrives for the days the wind does not show up. Aquila has announced a 45 Sail and a 65 Sail; neither is reviewed on this site.

Moving Up the Sail Series
With one boat reviewed, the choice inside the Sail line is a choice of layout rather than of length. Four cabins is the owner's version and gives the most private volume per person. Six cabins with six heads is the charter answer, and it is the configuration the private-entrance layout is really built around. Five sits between them. Aquila also lists a forepeak cabin as an option and one utility room — that room is storage and systems space, not crew accommodation. There are no crew quarters on this boat in any configuration.
If you are coming across from Aquila's outboard catamarans, the numbers that will surprise you are beam and draft. The 50 Sail is 25'9" wide and draws 4'8", against hull drafts of around two feet with the motors up on the Sport and Molokai boats, and it is CE Category A rated for ocean passages. It also carries 232 gallons of water against 222 of fuel, which tells you what kind of boat it is — one built to stay away from a dock rather than to get back to one quickly.
Our Take
I came to the 50 Sail expecting to talk myself into it and got talked into it by the layout drawing instead. Six cabins, six heads with showers, and every cabin with its own entrance. That last part is the whole boat. On most catamarans this size somebody is walking through somebody else's space to get to bed, and on a charter week that is the thing people remember afterwards.
What I like is what it does not try to be. Twin 50 HP saildrives, a conventional rig with a furling genoa, 1,679 square feet of upwind sail. Nothing exotic, nothing that needs a specialist flown in. If you want more, Aquila will sell you 60 or 75 HP saildrives and a square-top main. I would take the standard rig and put the money into the six-cabin layout.
Buy it for the nights. At 232 gallons of water against 222 of fuel, this is a boat designed to be away from a dock, and it is a slow and expensive way to own a day boat if that is not what you actually want.
